Local Crisis Ministry
I wanted to highlight a local crisis ministry that many of you may not be familiar.
The Western Wake Crisis Ministry is was founded in 1983 by a small group of churches interested in coordinating aid to our neighbors in need in Apex, Holly Springs and surrounding areas. WWCM has grown from having about 10 visitors each month to meeting with over 250 families each month who are seeking crisis aid and referral resources.
What types of assistance does WWCM provide?
WWCM can provide clients with assistance with food, heating fuel, utilities, medical expenses, rent and repairs. We can also provide referrals to several agencies in Wake county to provide clients with help with housing, medical care, employment, childcare and other needs. Please click here to be directed to more information about our services.
What are the volunteer needs?
The Crisis Ministry is staffed completely by volunteers from the community, many of whom are affiliated with one of the churches that sponsor us. We welcome volunteers of any faith and hope you will join us in serving the local community!
Office volunteers are always needed. Most work three hour shifts on a weekly or monthly basis. Our office volunteers ensure WWCM runs smoothly by stocking food, packing food bags, answering the phone, interviewing clients and helping with general housekeeping and cleaning duties. If you are not available during office hours please consider one of the following ways you can help to support us:
- Tell others about our website our and “Weekly Food Need” list. Ask those you tell to pass the word along!
- Plan a food drive in your neighborhood, civic group or church. Here’s an example of one way to conduct such a food drive that has been very successful in several of the local churches. Distribute paper grocery bags with a letter attached, explaining what WWCM is and what we do, as well as a list of typical items we pack in a bag. Click here for a sample letter you can customize to your individual needs.
- Attend a general monthly meeting. We hold meetings once per month and they are open to church members or community liaisons who are interested in remaining updated on current events.
- Collect shampoo, soap, toilet paper, deodorant, razors, shaving cream, feminine hygiene products, etc. Products are needed throughout the year. We try to provide at least one bar of soap and a roll of toilet paper with each bag of food.
- Collect other items you think that our clients and their children would enjoy. People have done various things over the years - for example, one group collected “summer fun buckets” for kids by filling sand pails with bubble stuff, crackers, juice, and a few small toys - WWCM distributed them to families in early June. The sky is the limit!!!
- Write a story about us for the local newspaper. Interview office volunteers and write about their experiences with clients that have touched their hearts.
- Bake Sale, Yard Sale or other Fundraiser event - A group or organization can plan a fundraiser at any time of the year to raise much needed funds for WWCM. The sky is the limit for persons interested in fundraising! We have sold everything from barbecue to yard sale items to make money for WWCM.
- Collect Holiday Meals. Click HERE for more information.
- Pray for us! This works wonders!
- Call us for other ideas (362-0657). The director often has ideas that someone has suggested that may not pop up on this list!
